Nella sua lunga storia, la Dakar ha ingoiato la vita di sette giornalisti. I primi in assoluto, su un perfido tratto della Transahariana, due italiani: Giuseppe De Tommaso e Andrea Carisi. Argentini gli ultimi, Dakar del 2014; dinamica identica e identica sorte. Il grande racconto della corsa ha richiesto il suo tributo di sangue, come la corsa stessa, e non poteva essere altrimenti nell’avventura che ha preteso anche la vita del suo stesso creatore, come una bestia selvaggia, che più provi a domarla più lei si dimena, morde, e graffia. Donazzan è uno che la Dakar l’ha fatta; macchina stampa, s’intende, sempre appresso alla corsa, la carovana infernale. Non sorprende perciò la sicurezza con cui si appropria di intere biografie, per tradurle nella sua lingua romantica. Picco, Orioli, Winkler, Marinoni, De Petri, Terruzzi, Meoni, solo alcuni dei sessanta piloti presenti qui (artisti, sognatori, ribelli, come li chiama lui); tanti, ma nessuno superfluo, ognuno raccontato con acutezza, innato senso del dettaglio, radiografia dei gesti. Un libro lungo, storiografico, esaustivo quanto lo può essere un semplice libro, riguardo quell’esperienza masochista, pericolosa, spesso tragica, eppure irresistibile chiamata Dakar; una roba che, parafrasando Churchill, produce più Storia di quanta ne possa digerire. E allora dio benedica Gigi Soldano, le sue foto, per completezza: numerose, necessarie, definitive; gli indizi d’asprezza nelle tute sporche di sabbia, l’aria densa di polvere, il nomadismo dei bivacchi alla buona, gli orizzonti africani, vuoti, bellissimi e indifferenti. Dakar, l’inferno nel Sahara: se non lo avete, compratelo, se già lo possedete, allora rileggetelo, per la tecnica e la passione con cui è scritto, epica del giornalismo sportivo, motivo e valore del tributo pagato.
