For much of the last century, Sicily hosted major annual races with international appeal.
The importance of these car races was not only in the quality of the cars that took part or in the level of validity of the sporting event on the calendar.
Much of their importance is certainly attributable to the stature of drivers who competed. The Great Sicilian Races were an almost century-old parade of drivers who wrote the history of motor racing.
They were Targa and Coppa Florio, Giro di Sicilia, Grand Prix of Syracuse of Formula 1, Mediterranean Grand Prix of Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3000 (Inter and Euro), Coppa d'Oro di Sicilia, Coppa Vinci (Coppa Messina), Coppa Etna, Coppa Nissena, Circuito della Cravatta in Enna, Coppa Città di Enna, 10 Ore Notturna Messinese, and the uphill races Cefalù - Gibilmanna, Catania-Etna, Palermo - Montepellegrino and Trapani - Monte Erice.
Each one has its own story, fascinating, deeply felt, experienced and participated in over the years, from the beginning until their end, and written by about 300 drivers, 'champions' of first level, as Salvatore Requirez calls them.
They are all mentioned in the pages of his latest work, Memorie dell'Isola: from archive notes, images, reports of exhilarating performances, unpublished anecdotes and autobiographies. The author dedicates a more complete and in-depth profile to 90 of these champions - listed in the index.
