The 200 Miglia di Imola was held for 13 editions in the years between 1972 and 1985; the 1977 and 1978 editions were valid for the World Motorcycle Championship (Formula 750 class).

Creator and great promoter of the event was Checco Costa, a sporting executive of Imola and organiser of world motorbike races, who had been thinking for a long time about an event where European motorcyclists and North American rivals could compete using motorbikes more powerful than 500cc.

The only country in which motorbikes over 500 cc raced were the USA; the most famous event was the Daytona 200 Miles, where series-derived motorbikes from over 500 cc to 750 cc competed.

It is no coincidence that for the launch of the 750 formula in Europe, Costa coined the slogan 200 Miglia di Imola: la Daytona d'Europa, which is also the title of this publication, printed for the second edition.

The 200 Miglia di Imola also introduced many innovations in the marketing of sporting events. Until 1972 the racing world had maintained traditions that had lasted since the 1940s: the drivers' overalls were strictly in black, as were the race stewards' uniforms, and the race programme was written in black ink.

At Imola everything changed from black and white to colour: for the first time (at least in Europe) the riders wore bright uniforms and the stewards abandoned their plain colours. Even the programme was printed in colour, as were the race logo stickers and passes for photographers. Imola thus launched a trend that was emulated by all motorcycling circuits.

The first edition of the competition was a great success; in just a few years the Imola race became an unmissable appointment of the world season.

The 95 pages of 200 Miglia di Imola: la Daytona d'Europa tells us the story of the second edition in 1973, with texts by Ezio Pirazzini and dozens of magnificent photographs that render in full, moment by moment, the frenzy in the pits, the work of the mechanics, the anxiety of the start, the hope of victory, the emotion of the riders.
