The Porsche 917 made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show in 1969. When the FIA raised the displacement limit for the five-liter sports car championship in 1968, Porsche seized the opportunity: within a year, manufacturer Hans Mezger created the car.

The 917 already achieved the goal of absolute victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1970 and 1971, and subsequently reached 1100 turbo horsepower in the CanAm series.

In 2019, on the occasion of the special exhibition set up in Zuffenhausen for the half-century of the 917, the Porsche Museum printed this book which enriches the series of official publications edited by the Stuttgart house, with photos and documents not easy to find.

This volume, of over 320 pages, is obviously inspired by the museum exhibition, but it is also a valuable tool for tracing the history of the 917 beyond the celebrations of the fiftieth anniversary.

The main references are the cars on display, but they are only a starting point to explore numerous technical, sporting, design and even custom themes, which the Porsche 917 has represented over the years.

In addition to the cars, the most representative drivers who have achieved successes with this car in Europe and the United States are presented, and some curiosities, such as the famous Telochรฉ workshop which hosted the official team for over thirty years during the 24 Hours of Le Mans.ย
