The rally in Sardinia is a social event as well as a sport, being rooted in the territory and culture of the majority of its inhabitants. In people's memory, the early Costa Smeralda Rallyes are mentioned as something mythical, special.
For all Sardinian fans of this sport, as well as for me, Henri Toivonen still remains an icon, a sort of Gigi Riva of rallies. My career as a journalist began in 1984 as a commentator of the Rally Costa Smeralda for the local broadcaster Radio Hobby, in order to follow the exploits of the Finnish champion who won the 7th Rally Costa Smeralda with a Porsche, despite the fact that he was still on crutches.
Then in 1994 the race was stopped and resumed in 1998 under the patronage of Sardegna Grandi Eventi, regaining with time validity for the italian rally championships. In 2004 arrived in Sardinia the world rally championship thanks to the Rally Italia Sardinia. And so it flourishes again the big island passion for rallies and
its champions of the 21st century: Sainz, Solberg, Loeb, Gronholm, Hirvonen, Latvala and Ogier. And the new race, the Rally Italy Sardinia fact, has become a fixture in the world championship calendar, thanks to selectivity, the spectacle and the beauty of the island's dirt roads of the four moors.
This book will first point out the champions of the past, illustrate the younger the emotions transmitted pilots who ran the first sixteen editions of the Costa Smeralda, and also evoke the image of those samples that today with their memorable feats are giving luster to gravel roads of Sardinia in the world rally championship.
