Grandi piloti di ieri was first published in 1966, and then, a year later, translated in Italian and published by L'Editrice dell'Automobile, as part of a series in which important names of sports journalism explored the variegated world of the automobile.

The volume includes many biographies of great drivers who, in a special and relevant way, writes curator David Hodges, marked the various eras of this sport. Deliberately, moreover, those drivers whose careers had not yet ended at the time this volume went to press were excluded.

Biographies written by more than twenty European and American journalists, some of them very prominent, all trained through daily contact with motor sport and its protagonists.

The drivers: Camille Jenatzy, Felice Nazzaro, Christian Lautenschlager, David Bruce-Brown, Georges Boillot, Ralph de Palma, Sir Henry Segrave, Antonio e Alberto Ascari, Robert Benoist, Tazio Nuvolari, Sir Henry Birkin, Rudolf Caracciola, Achille Varzi, Louis Chiron, Luigi Fagioli, Hans Stuck, Philippe Etancelin, Jean-Pierre Wimille, Raymond Sommer, Dick Seaman, Hermann Lang, Bernd Rosemeyer, Wilbur Shaw, Giuseppe Farina, Juan Manuel Fangio, Mike Hawthorn, Peter Collins and Stirling Moss.
