Jim Clark (March 4, 1936 - April 7, 1968) is a true motorsport legend, two-time Formula 1 World Champion, in which he always raced with Colin Chapman's Lotus from 1960 to 1968.
In 1963, driving the Lotus 25, Clark recorded seven wins out of ten races, a record that gave Lotus its first success in the Drivers 'World Championship and in the Constructors' Cup. Clark also won five other non-championship races, and entered the Indianapolis 500, earning the Rookie of the year award.
In 1965 Clark was again World Champion with the Lotus 33, he won the first race in South Africa, he won the Indianapolis 500 with the Lotus 38. In the Formula 1 Championship, he took the maximum points three months before the end. He won three times in front of a rookie Jackie Stewart, Scottish like him.
To date, Clark is the only driver to have won the F1 World Championship and the Indianapolis 500 in the same year, and on 9 July 1965 he appeared on the cover of the prestigious Time.
On April 7, 1968, during a Formula 2 race in Hockenheim, he had a fatal accident. The causes were never ascertained, perhaps the most likely hypothesis is that of mechanical failure.
During his Formula 1 career Clark raced 72 Grands Prix, winning 25, with 33 pole positions.
Jim Clark is buried in Chirnside Cemetery in Berwickshire. A small museum has been dedicated to him in Duns, known as The Jim Clark Room.
