A priest with a passion for racing? Is that possible? The answer is ‘yes’, judging by the story of Don Sergio Mantovani, which has never been told before. He was nicknamed Don Ruspa (Father Bulldozer) by Enzo Ferrari (he had a small Gothic parish church in the Modena area demolished over night to make room for an old folks’ home…after the authorities had refused their authorisation!!!) From the mid-Fifties, Don Ruspa became the friend and confidante of some of the greatest Formula 1 drivers, among them Fangio, Bandini, Lauda, De Angelis, right through to today’s champions. His story is told in an easy-reading book by the ever able pen of Cesare De Agostini who, after a long interview with Don Sergio, really does reconstruct the life, death and miracles of this racers’ priest.
