In the history of national industry there is a name that, for political rather than historical reasons, is barely whispered, quietly slumbering in the memory of a few true history enthusiasts who - almost a century later - still remember a pioneering and prosperous era full of social contrasts.

National industry largely owes what it is today to a few public managers. Ugo Gobbato is an engineer with a revolutionary vision, who arrives at Alfa Romeo after completing important projects with Fiat.

His personal experience is intertwined with that of workers and power, constantly wavering between the fragile political balances of nationalisation, devalued shares and bank interests and, why not, also that somewhat romantic idea of Nicola Romeo, who had believed in A.L.F.A.'s potential from the first moment.

His skilful and prolific experience lasted twenty years, from the first war to the American experience, from the birth of the Lingotto in Turin to the new aeronautical pole in Pomigliano d'Arco, passing through Alfa Romeo's industrial re-launch plan to the war reconversion.

Until that tragic epilogue on 28 April 1945, when he was victim of summary justice invoked in the streets and in the factories by improvised and often unjust tribunals of the people, and Italy was deprived of one of the most illuminated leaders in its history.
