The book tells the compelling true story of Eusebio Garavini (1881-1947). Born to a family of day laborers and semi-illiterate, Eusebio emigrated from a small town in Romagna to Turin in 1898.

Starting out as a factory worker and attending evening classes, he managed to establish his own successful coachbuilding company (Carrozzeria Garavini) within a few years, an enterprise that would eventually employ over 700 workers.

The author, Daniela Garavini, structures the narrative around an intimate and original format: an imaginary dialogue between herself and the grandfather she never met.

Through this poignant conversation, Eusebio retraces the key moments of his private and public life. He reflects on his family origins, meeting his wife, his relationship with his children, and his innovative approach to business (such as establishing a mutual health fund for his employees as early as the 1920s).

Eusebio's private and professional life intertwines with the major events of the time: the Belle Époque, World War I, the Biennio Rosso, Fascism, the 1929 crisis, World War II, the Resistance, and the 1946 referendum.

Al tempo delle officine is deeply rooted in both cherished family memories and rigorous archival documents. As highlighted by historian Giovanni De Luna in the preface, the book beautifully weaves personal family history with the broader social and industrial history of Turin.
