When Alfa Romeo officially unveiled the Alfetta in 1972, Italy had not yet experienced the oil crisis. European manufacturers were thus thinking of producing very comfortable, high-performance saloons, daughters of a concept introduced since the 1960s, i.e. the comfortable family car.

But the Alfetta, which clearly distinguished itself from the competition, respected the tradition of the Milanese company, that of a saloon always with superior performance as a true "car that wins races".

Its highly refined technical characteristics included Alfa's classic 1800 cm3 4-cylinder engine with a power output of 140 SAE bhp and the reintroduction of the shifting of the transmission components to the rear axle. The particular suspension scheme, the famous De Dion axle, and other peculiar solutions completed the mechanical layout.

The styling was definitely new compared to the Biscione production of the period. On the side, in the door stop area, appeared for the first time the logo of the Centro Stile Alfa Romeo, to which we owe the study of the bodywork.

The Alfetta thus continued the line of previous Alfa saloons, 1900, Giulietta and Giulia, and like these was a commercial success.

In this title - part of the successful series "Le vetture che hanno fatto la storia" - the author, Giancarlo Catarsi, illustrates in great detail the history of all versions of Alfetta, including GT and GTV sports versions, also analysing the stylistic and technical evolution of this car that distinguished Alfa Romeo in the 1970s.
