There are many stories in the story of Alfasud in Pomigliano d'Arco. Nicola Romeo's brief industrial dream, but above all the parable of public intervention in Italy: from the birth of the IRI to the end of the State Holdings, and then the great season of privatization.

There are the many efforts - and the many mistakes - to modernize the Mezzogiorno. There is a century of industry and politics: of Taylorists and Fordists, from Gobbato to Luraghi; of Christian Democrats and Communists, from Leone to Moro, from Berlinguer to Prodi.

There is a century of Italian society: from the great boom to the workers' conflict, from Italian-style liberalism to the last great crisis.

This essay intends to trace an overall profile of Pomigliano's history, which cannot be reconstructed through archive documents alone.

In fact, the debate that has always accompanied this large factory in southern Italy requires us to leaf through reports and studies, and listen to protagonists from the world of work and industry, politics and the trade union.

To understand that this is not a "southern" story, but a great Italian story, and that it concerns the future, much more than the past.
