If the legend is true, the Audi 100 Coupé S was not the result of a sophisticated marketing strategy, but rather the personal desire of the technical director at the time, Ludwig Kraus, who in the 1960s wanted a coupé instead of a standard saloon as his company car.
And the team led by designer Hartmut Warkuß really did manage to create a beautiful two-door car that could compete with the models of famous Italian designers.
In keeping with the taste of the time, the interior was dominated by velvet-covered seats and wood trim. The Coupé S was powered by a 112 hp four-cylinder engine, which, with a kerb weight of less than a tonne, had no difficulty propelling it.
Only the relatively high price of 14,000 German marks at the time caused sales to be modest, making this beautiful car from Ingolstadt a highly sought-after classic today.
In this comprehensive monograph, Audi expert Dirk-Michael Conradt illustrates the development history and model variants of the coupé that influenced Audi's styling.
