Bugatti 64 - La voiture de Monsieur Jean by Jean-Phillipe Müller is the very first book to chronicle the story of the Bugatti Type 64, a visionary but ultimately unfinished project.

  • Historical Context: In 1937, recognizing the need for a successor to the highly successful Type 57 series (which included the iconic Atlantic), Jean Bugatti and his closest associates began secret work on a new high-performance, four-seater Grand Tourer: the Type 64.
  • Technical Innovation: The car was revolutionary, featuring a highly aerodynamic design and a duralumin chassis that saved over 100 kg in weight. Most spectacularly, it incorporated the very first use of gullwing doors—patented by Jean Bugatti himself (though they were later replaced by conventional doors due to reliability issues).
  • A Tragic Fate: By 1939, a prototype was completed, and the Type 64 was poised to become history's first full-aluminum production car. Tragically, Jean Bugatti's fatal car accident and the outbreak of World War II abruptly killed the project. Only one complete prototype and four chassis were ever built. Today, the surviving prototype is on display at the Musée National de L'Automobile (Schlumpf Collection) in Mulhouse, France.
  • Book Content: Müller's book meticulously documents the car's history and the challenging circumstances at Bugatti during that era. It features 123 illustrations (many previously unknown) and corrects several historical misconceptions regarding the car's motorization.
