Gianni Marchiol, doyen of competitors, a 52-year amateur racing career that began back in 1966.

What he has achieved he has earned, strengthened only by the stubbornness of always wanting to remain himself. A road, his, immediately uphill. It began with his parents, brother, and sisters in the popular San Rocco quarter of the city, helping his father as a child who sold pancakes at the fruit and vegetable market in Via Volturno to supplement the family budget.

He confesses the humiliation he felt at school, when he was sent to the last desk because he smelled of oil:

Certo erano anni difficili ed i "grandi" si inventavano i lavori per mantenere la famiglia ed, anche se mi sentivo orgoglioso di poter aiutare i miei, soffrivo per quello che io consideravo un sopruso. Ho vissuto questa esperienza come una caduta che ha lasciato una profonda cicatrice, ma, proprio da quella caduta, ho trovato la forza per riscattarmi.

Then at the fruit and vegetable market, he continued to earn a living; even after his retirement, he joined his son Marco in running the old, tried and tested family business that supplies packaging material to wholesalers and retailers.

However, as an intelligent and sensible person, he found a way to assert himself in life by dedicating himself to what he felt inclined to do. Football constituted for him, as for many of his generation, the means of redemption.

So here he was, initially acting as a goalkeeper and then becoming a striker until he reached the Serie C to play with Vittorio Veneto, Legnano, and Mestrina. A more than honourable career. Feeling his career winding down, he found new motivation in the world of motor sports

And in more than half a century, the motoring balance collected records all kinds of victories and above all Italian titles in hillclimbs, rallies and track, showing uncommon versatility at the wheel.

Achievements that have not distracted him from his generous impulse to teach football to young people and collaborate with Don Davide Larice to help those youngsters facing existential difficulties. Another side to his personality.
