They wanted to kidnap Enzo Ferrari. No, this isn't the plot of a film. This is a true story. It happened fifty years ago, in the days when the Grande Vecchio was celebrating the Red Team's reconquest of the F1 world title.
It was the morning of Saturday 25 October 1975, just a few hours before the presentation of the single-seater that would compete in the 1976 F1 World Championship. Two bandits were stopped in Corso Canalgrande in Modena while they were very close to carrying out the kidnapping of the century.
The police foiled the kidnapping while the Drake was being shaved in his trusted barber shop. Subsequent investigations revealed the involvement of the Marseilles Clan, which was spreading terror throughout Italy in those months.
This true-life novel tells a story that's mostly unknown. Enzo Ferrari, the greatest Italian there could be at that time and in other moments of our history, isn't just a failed hostage, he becomes a symbol of a way of life and of being armoured that was the norm for many wealthy people.
Daily life with a gun in your pocket, an equally armed driver and a bodyguard always on your heels with a machine gun between the two seats of the service car was, unfortunately, not the exception.
Kidnappings were a real nightmare that plunged the Maranello legend into depression and haunted him even after he left his earthly life.
