The VW Karmann Ghia was originally conceived as a promotional tool for Volkswagen, but its wonderful shape ensured that demand almost always outstripped supply.
The Ghia stylist of the early 1950s had a freer hand than usual, and what they produced would be good enough to remain in production for nineteen years.
Author and photographer Stuart Johnston has recorded all the adaptations of that first design, as well as providing an insight into restoration and engine massaging for the beautiful little car with more than a touch of Porsche blood running through its fuel lines.
