The Preliminary Tests (Essais Préliminaires) of the 24 Hours of Le Mans took place from 1959 to 1974. Following the volume dedicated to the years 1970 to 1974, this book covers the period from 1959 to 1969, a decade marked first by the dominance of Ferrari, soon surpassed by the power of Ford and then the Porsche 917.
Spoilers, wings, and quickly abandoned aerodynamic configurations flourished; some chased the lap record while others hid their true potential. It was a weekend for enthusiasts, often taking place in the wind and under downpours, during which cars and motorcycles of the Critérium International Motocycliste coexisted.
