Porsche – Perfektion ist selbstverständlich – in English, Porsche: Excellence Was Expected – is universally recognised by collectors and motoring historians as the definitive ‘bible’ of Porsche’s history.
The book, written by the former automotive executive and renowned historian Karl Ludvigsen, is undoubtedly the most comprehensive and authoritative work ever produced on the Stuttgart-based car manufacturer.
This edition (updated to 2007 and published in 2008 in three volumes) represents the first major update since the 2003 edition and covers over a century of history, from Ferdinand Porsche’s very first designs right through to the development of models in the early 2000s.
The work is organised chronologically. Ludvigsen does not merely list the road-going models, but explores the company’s exceptional legacy in motorsport, the inner workings of the business and the challenges faced by the company’s key designers.
- Volume 1: 1900 - 1971. Early designs by Ferdinand Porsche, the first Gmünd coupes, the legendary 356, Formula I involvement, the complex birth of the 911, and early major racing campaigns.
- Volume 2: 1970s - 1990s. The mighty 917's Le Mans victories, the transaxle front-engine era (924, 928, 944), the rise of the Turbo 911s, and Porsche's outright domination in Group C racing.
- Volume 3: 1981 - 2007. The technological tour-de-force 959, the final air-cooled 911s (Type 993), the critical success of the Boxster, the water-cooled 996, the highly profitable Cayenne, the Carrera GT, and the advent of the 997, Cayman, and Panamera.
This updated 3-volume set brought significant additions over the previous 2003 release, making it incredibly sought-after:

- Visuals: Over 1,800 archival photographs, technical diagrams, and illustrations.
- What was new: 257 new or revised pages, 230 new photos, and five completely new full-color chapters detailing the RS Spyder's ALMS domination, the Cayman, the Type 997 production and GT racers, and the impending 2009 Panamera. The extensive "Competition Victories" appendix was also fully updated.
