At the end of 1965, the formula for Grand Prix cars underwent a radical change. The maximum displacement for naturally aspirated engines increased from 1,500 to 3,000 cubic centimeters, and the minimum empty weight rose from 450 to 500 kilograms.
This meant a shift back toward the formulas that were in effect until 1960: a return to power. Consequently, speeds—along with the demands on the drivers and the thrill of the crowds—saw a sudden increase. Between 1965 and 1966, for example, the kilometers per hour on the fastest lap at Monza jumped from 214.730 to 224.025.
A systematic review of the Grand Prix races held around the world under the active formula—as well as the cars, circuits, and drivers—is the subject of this volume by Michael Frostick, which is being published simultaneously in Great Britain and Italy.
