What was once a status symbol of rich and wealthy gentlemen, what was a workhorse for transport companies and farmers, now lies abandoned somewhere in a barn, in a field, in a forest or in the middle of a desert under the blazing sun.

What used to be shiny paint is now a layer of moss, interspersed with a patina of brown rust. On the one hand, it is sad to see these old cars die, on the other, it is fascinating to photographically document the work and wear of time on these objects.

Dieter Klein has done so, demonstrating a rare and very special sensitivity in portraying all this. Starting with a forgotten Citroën truck somewhere in France, his research and passion has become a real hobby. Klein collected skeletons of weathered cars in many countries and travelled extensively, especially in America.

During these trips, Dieter Klein has covered more than 25,000 miles to find forgotten cars, some of them rare and much sought-after. The 1948 Pontiac in White, Georgia, the Packard Clipper in Bard, California, for example, or the 1949 Cadillac Fleetwood, which was abandoned in a garage in Nelson, Nevada.

All names that say little to many people, especially the younger generation in Europe, but which represent truly unforgettable milestones in American automotive history.

What happens to car relicts? Many of them belong to dealers who sell them as ''venerable relics'' to fanatics who want to restore these cars one day - or they become spare parts for a new use on the same model.

Don Woller is one such dealer, in Lamar. Colorado. About 5,000 classic cars are parked here on 85 acres. 'It rarely rains here, and his cars are in perfect condition', he says.

You can read such stories in these two volumes, whose texts, written by Christian Vogeler, are accompanied by Dieter Klein's beautiful photographs.
