For this, the fourth Collector's Guide devoted to the sporting versions of Ford's European production cars, Graham Robson turns his attention to the Sierra, the car which in less than a decade has become the company's pre-eminent high-performance model, outselling outperforming the legendary Escorts and rapidly building up an astonishingly successful competition record.

Beginning with a look at the Sierra's heritage from the Cortina and Escort RS models, the author details the emergence of the V6-powered XR4i and, for the USA market, the turbocharged Merkur XR4Ti, sister cars from the Cologne plant.

Then comes the XR4x4, Ford's first foray into four-wheel drive for a production saloon, a successful and innovative model in its own right as well as an exciting curtain-raiser for things to come.

With the appearance of the dramatic Sierra RS Cosworth in 1986, the model's sporting career really took off, and the subsequent four-door version took Ford firmly into a new market niche for high-performance prestige saloons.

The development of the RS500 made the Sierra unbeatable on the race track, and the author records the rallying and rally-cross exploits of the car too.

Related projects including the 4x4 Estate and Granada Scorpio are not forgotten, and, as with all Collector's Guides, there is advice on choice and purchase.

The Sporting Fords Vol. 4: Sierras includes interesting appendices with technical and performance data, information for car identification and the interchangeability of components.
