Eighteen races on nine prestigious European circuits have not been sufficient to designate the 2003 European touring car champion.
Before the race in Monza, the last of the series, the Alfa Romeo Autodelta driver Gabriele Tarquini was in command, with six successes in previous races.
But the competition was very fierce, much that his main opponent was on equal points. The stakes were high, also because the Alfa Romeo had won the last three consecutive continental titles.
It was therefore necessary to confirm the supremacy in the Championships, where the protagonists are cars very close to series production.
