In this second volume - after the first focusing on the 1900-1940 period - Fiat's photographic memory returns us the history of the second and most radical Italian industrialisation: expansion of industrial settlements, mechanisation of agriculture, progressive modification of production facilities, development of infrastructures and services.

While in the background there are visible signs of a changing society: from the evident and stubborn desire to start again in the 1950s to the productive safety of the 1980s, passing through the contradictory nature of consumism and the critical experiences of social conflicts and national calamities.

But also for the way of presenting facts and then turning them into images, the period from the post-World War II to 1980, the one covered in this volume, constitutes a new cycle, full of new elements.

The homogeneity of the first decades of the century, which was based on the need to render legible the complexity of the production structure, was replaced by a professional interest in partial aspects of reality that progressively came to isolate a single detail and to be influenced by a single movement, a single colour.

The Immagini dall'Archivio Fiat 1940-1980 are a precious testimony of these epochal changes in industry, customs and society.
