He dies after 72 hours of agony. Since Ascari's death twelve years before, Italy had waited a long time.
It is true that after Ascari, there were Eugenio Castellotti and Luigi Musso, but they had disappeared from racing without having shown - or having had time to show - their abilities to compete for the world title.
