The tale of BMW Art Cars began in 1975, when French racing driver and auctioneer Hervé Poulain conceived the notion of participating in the 24 Hours of Le Mans with a BMW designed by an artist.
Jochen Neerpasch, who led BMW Motorsport at that time, fully supported the concept, leading to the creation of the inaugural BMW Art Car: a BMW 3.0 CSL adorned in vibrant primary colors by American sculptor Alexander Calder.
Once Calder’s creation took to the track, it quickly became a crowd favorite. This marked the first instance where art and motorsport united, heralding the start of a remarkable tradition.
Since 1975, twenty artists have designed BMW models, with many "rolling sculptures" proving their worth not only in museums, but also previously on the Le Mans race track.
Amid them, John Baldessari, Alexander Calder, Sandro Chia, Olafur Eliasson, Cao Fei, David Hockney, Jenny Holzer, Jeff Koons, Roy Lichtenstein, César Manrique, Julie Mehretu, A.R. Penck, Robert Rauschenberg, Frank Stella and Andy Warhol.
Bmw Art Cars, in this new, extended edition, published in 2025, celebrates this important anniversary.
