There are many books on classic cars, but almost none on the development and production of the vehicles. Nevertheless, the subject is of great interest to enthusiasts.

This book uses the example of the Borgward Isabella to illustrate how cars are designed and produced. The publication was made possible by the combination of three elements:

  • Thanks to the acquisition of the archives of the Borgward factory photographers, images showing the production process in detail were made available.
  • For more than 30 years, the author conducted interviews with former Borgward employees. Among them were the leading production technicians and designers of the Isabella.
  • With the professional support of current automotive engineers, it was possible to reconstruct the development and production processes of the 1950s.

This made it possible to present the individual stages in the correct sequence: conception, design, prototype construction, test phase, production planning and series production.

The Isabella rolled off the assembly line in July 1954. Production of this successful classic ended in 1962. Borgward's masterpiece still enjoys a great reputation today.
