Bruno Giacomelli is one of the most beloved drivers of the fabulous 1970s and 1980s in Formula 1. With 69 Grand Prix races under his belt and a podium at Las Vegas in 1981, he is closely associated with Alfa Romeo, for whom he raced for four seasons.
All his fans remember his fabulous pole position at Watkins Glen in 1980 and his starring role in the US East Grand Prix, until his unlucky retirement due to a technical problem, when he had overtaken all the big names in Formula 1, doubling the Ferraris of Scheckter and Villeneuve.
But Bruno, as the nostalgic title of his autobiography, co-written with journalist Mario Donnini, suggests, was affectionately nicknamed "Jack O'Malley" by the British, from his days racing in F1 with McLaren, underlining the esteem that the driver from Roncadelle always enjoyed in the UK.
This was also due to his decision to settle in England in the mid-1970s, becoming the most supported driver by Robin Herd, owner of March, with whom he dominated European F2 in the magical 1978 season.
F1, F2, F3, IndyCar, World Prototypes, Indy 500, Le Mans... Bruno tasted everything in his career during the golden age. His colourful, sincere and revealing account of a life in racing is a wonderful journey into a world that is warmly remembered and missed by all die-hard enthusiasts.
