Johnny Alberto Cecotto is the hero of two worlds, Venezuela, his native country, and Italy, his second home, and of two sports: racing and winning on two and four wheels. Not many have achieved this: Nuvolari, Surtees, Hailwood, Valentino. And Cecotto.

350cc world champion in 1975, at just 19 years of age. And third in the Daytona 200, which he won the following year. Then world champion in the 750 class in 1978 and winner of three editions of the 200 Miglia di Imola: at 24, Johnny had already won everything on two wheels. Or almost everything: the premier class, the 500, eluded him, and this is still a sore point for him today.

In 1980, he made the big leap to four wheels. And he was in Formula 2, where in 1982 he had as his track engineer a young Adrian Newey, then at the beginning of his career, and where he lost the European Championship spectacularly, for just one point.

Then came Formula 1, his childhood dream, shattered on a cold Friday morning in 1984 at Brands Hatch, when, together with his Toleman – where he was teammate to a predestined rookie, Ayrton Senna – his ankles and his greatest ambition were destroyed.

Miraculously able to walk again, Johnny also returned to racing. No longer in Formula 1, but in the Touring Car category and in particular with BMW, winning over 50 races, including the 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps and the Nürburgring, and several prestigious championships.
