At the end of the 1950s, two great personalities of world motorsport, Ferdinand Porsche and Carlo Abarth, agreed to create a racing car based on Porsche 356, capable of competing and winning in the Grand Touring World Championship thus allowing the German manufacturer to rise to world market success.
Therefore Porsche decided to turn to Italian racing car builders and coachbuilders that were able to transform road cars capable of winning races. The agreement stipulated that 20 cars derived from the Porsche 356B would be built in 1960, with an option for a further 20.
Porsche would supply the chassis and engines for the car and Abarth would build the bodywork, producing a car with low weight and excellent aerodynamic qualities that would immediately prove to be a winner.
The project was given to coachbuilder Franco Scaglione, an expert in aerodynamics who designed a futuristic Porsche - Abarth while the manufacture of the aluminium bodywork was commissioned to coachbuilder Rocco Motto of Turin.
The new car took the name "Porsche 356B GS Carrera GTL Abarth", i.e. "Gran Turismo Leggera", built for the 1960 racing season.
Despite over 400 races disputed all over the world and more than 100 victories for Porsche, although the partnership with Carlo Abarth was cancelled, the operation revealed successful, but for the latter it was not.
Il pungente scorpione tedesco, written by Salvatore Calvaruso, tells the origins and exploits of this Grand Touring car, with a precious and compelling account, well illustrated and documented.
