To tell a complete story of the world's most beautiful race, perhaps the most fascinating motor race in the world, is impossible. There are too many aspects, people and subjects involved to do so.

This account starts from the origins of this extraordinary race and traces its chronology from 1927, the year of the first edition, to 1957, when the last 'real' 1000 Miglia was held in Italy.

The history of the 24 editions reflects the technological, economic, social and cultural changes that swept across not only Italy, but also the whole Europe. The fact that the Mille Miglia has been a huge success among the public since the first edition is remarkable. Equally, noteworthy is the fervour of some Brescians to revive Brescia's status as an important motoring city.

The Mille Miglia, as we know today, reflects the same enthusiasm of the original planners. The formula, however, has changed. Today it is a regularity race, although for many entrants and spectators it is not. They come for the atmosphere, smell, sound. They want to get as close as possible to the feeling of the past Mille Miglia. And they want to feel the myth. And this is nowhere else to be found.

The author, Ward Thans, was already behind the wheel of a Mini at the age of 10, on his older brother's knees operating the pedals and gear lever. Over the years, his fascination and appreciation for classic cars grew.

It all started by taking photos at events with historic cars for Icons of Elegance, and now, that great passion has culminated in this book about the race of all races: Mille Miglia, la corsa più bella del mondo.
