In the record time of just eight months between the first draft on the drawing board and the roll-out on the test track at the Porsche Development Center in Weissach, a brand new sports car was created in accordance with the GT1 regulations.
Just three months later, the two 911 GT1s entered by the factory crossed the finish line together in the world's toughest endurance race at Le Mans and won the GT1 category in superior style.
After three further racing successes at Brands Hatch, Spa Francorchamps and Zhuhai, the decision was made to build eight customer 911 GT1 racing sports cars for the 1997 season.
At the same time, Porsche also built this super sports car 911 GT1 in an exclusive small series with purebred racing technology for the road. It is seldom possible to observe the development and creation of a new vehicle at close quarters, because such projects are classified and bear the stamp "Top Secret". Design offices and test workshops are hermetically sealed off from the outside world, and their employees are bound to absolute secrecy.
This illustrated book is an attempt to lift the veil of development a little, to give the reader an insight into the work behind closed doors. Ulrich Upietz was allowed to document the development from the beginning as a photographer.
On 224 color pages, the development history is documented, with never before published color photos of this fascinating sports car. Experienced specialist journalists provide facts and background information that are otherwise not available to the public.
