The years 1906 to 1951 cover a great period in motor-racing history, from the first French Grand Prix to the last appearance of cars that developed substantial horsepower, mostly with the aid of superchargers.

Many countries made substantial contributions to the movement, notably Belgium and the United States: indeed, it was America that carried the torch when the First World War put an end to European racing.

William Court deals in more detail than has previously been found with the influence of American events upon the revival of European racing between 1919 and 1927, this latter date being the last year when an American racing car made anything approaching a decisive intervention in Europe.

The tremendous expansion in the ‘20s, the decline of racing after 1927, the great influence of Maserati, Bugatti, and Alfa Romeo on the pattern of racing, and the revolution in design of Grand Prix cars brought about by the Germans between 1934 and 1939, are all treated in full and fascinating detail.

The cars that followed were all, to a greater or lesser extent, a development of these German ideas, until the big unblown Ferrari humbled the Alfa Romeo in the final year of 1951, where the main narrative ceases.

An Epilogue brings the story up-to-date and indicates the increasing British domination of the sport and also evaluates and compares the great drivers of 1906-1951.

All the great names feature, Nuvolari, Varzi, Fangio, Caracciola, Campari, Murphy, Segrave, Birkin, Stuck, Gonzales, Moss, etc.

Full appendices cover race tables of the events, records of individual drivers and marques, car specifications and a general summary of developments.

Power and Glory is concerned with the whole Grand Prix movement and the great drivers who carried it forward: an all-time classic title. Court's elegant style suits the era.
