"UNBEATABLE BMW". A racing revival 1959-1979 is a success story. In twenty years, Bayensche Motoren Werke has shot from the brink of financial disaster to the forefront of the European, even the world's, motor industry.

This is their factory racing story. It has not been easy reaching today's pinnacle, a pinnacle supported by an outstanding race record, an aggressive philosophy of "racing improves the breed", and a public following which is the envy of many a less image-conscious manufacturer.

The author tells of the factory cars; not only of their racing, but also of their technical development. The development of the BMW 700; the versatile four cylinder single overhead camshaft engine originally in the 1500 saloon; the 1800 and 2000 four doors; the unapproachable 2002 series; and finally the 320, are all described in some detail.

The Formula 2 single seaters are here, too. The story of the CS coupè, and how the four cylinder grew into six, is told for the first time in its entirety, while the 5 series and M1 coupé completes the history to date.

Jeremy Walton broadens the already fascinating developments by incorporating the very significant activities of the "factory's friends" - Alpina, Schnitzer, GS Tuning, McLaren Racing, Luigi, Walkinshaw and others.

He seeks help from the marque's drivers - Niki Lauda, the late Ronnie Peterson, Chris Amon, and Jackie Ickx being perhaps the best known. His is an analytical, often critical study, a study which proves that the Bee-Emm is as close to being "unbeatable" as is possible.

Contents: 1. When We Were Small … 2. The four-cylinder saloons arrive 3. Power for single seaters 4. The versatile 2002 and sons 5. Motorsport GmbH; the growth of a competition force 6. The big BMW that wouldn't lie down 7. Old Glory CSL racing memories 8. Enter the 3 series 9. The missing link 10. A very PROfessional CAR.

First edition, 1979.
