This book, published in 1951 with the title Porsche: Der Weg eines Zeitalters and commissioned by Ferdinand Porsche's son, tells the official story of the famous manufacturer's life.
From the electric car with hub motors in 1900 to the legendary Porsche 356, from torsion bar suspension to Third Reich tanks, from Volkswagen to agricultural engines, this book traces the technical journey of a mind that shaped the history of the automobile.
Through documents, drawings and project analyses, it reconstructs the trajectory of a designer who contributed, often ahead of his time, to redefining the concepts of lightness, power, efficiency and simplicity of construction.
More than a biography, Porsche L'uomo e la macchina is a journey through the mechanical evolution of European 20th-century history, amid industrial successes and historical contradictions, where technical objects – cars, tractors, tanks – become witnesses of an era.
Many historians believe that the book offers a selective and almost apologetic image, portraying Porsche as a “non-partisan technical genius”, without political orientation, and absolving him of collective responsibility for the regime.
