Targa Florio, il mito, published in 2007 to celebrate 100 years of the Targa Florio, is undoubtedly one of the most comprehensive works on this legendary race.

It began in 1906 and continued through sixty-one editions until 1977: a history that lasted over seventy years, so long as to legitimise the definition of the oldest race in the world.

Tracing such a long and complex life story has logically required the study of all the available information sources, from the official ones (printed material, magazines and single issues of the organisers) to the media ones (newspapers, periodicals, books), from the museum and photographic ones to the personal testimonies of drivers, insiders and enthusiasts.

The final result is a volume of 452 pages (of which 132 are just rankings) and 651 pictures.

The chapters of each edition are organised identically and include

  • an initial page consisting of an information sheet (with date, organiser, track, route, cars admitted, validity, number of starters, winner(s), record lap) and the race report (background, contingencies, teams, drivers, chronicle)
  • an iconographic section (ordered as far as possible according to the progress of the race)
  • the list of starters (in order with progressive number, race number, drivers, cars, and team)
  • the results (general classifications, classifications by categories and classes, overruns, eliminations, and withdrawals)

The work is then completed by albo d'oro (for each edition the progressive numbering, the circuit, the distance, the winner(s) and the fastest lap), an alphabetical index of the entrants (with the editions run, the victories and the cross-indication of name/pseudonym), a collection of testimonials and an up-to-date bibliography.
