This monograph - the first complete chronological history of Zagato models - fills a deeply felt gap. The history of Italian coachbuilding, and particularly the one most closely tied to the racing world, is also the history of Zagato.

In appearance, these were almost always light, compact, and rounded cars, featuring a distinct sculptural sense for domed roofs, sleek yet not disproportionately elongated noses, and truncated, somewhat intricate rear ends.

They were berlinettas born to race and win. Their design was dictated by a focus on extreme simplicity and practicality, synonymous with compact cars that reveal their true power to the observer without grandiloquent ostentation, reflecting the calm yet aggressive verve of Italian drivers.

These Zagatos were tough competitors for everyone, at the Mille Miglia, on all road courses, and on the track. In daily use, their character set them apart with a familiar aggression (enlivened by their "racing red" paintwork), causing the driver to always be viewed as a heavy-footed speed enthusiast.

However, the skill and quality of Zagato's work have also frequently yielded impeccable, high-class bodies with more elaborate fittings. With this book, Michele Marchianò celebrates the glories of the sporting spirit and artisanal passion of this House (from the publisher's presentation, 1984).
