Giovanni Canestrini, a writer and sports journalist, was one of the founders of the Mille Miglia, which was conceived during a meeting held at his home in December 1926, alongside Franco Mazzotti, Aymo Maggi, and Renzo Castagneto.

In 1924, the director of La Gazzetta dello Sport, Emilio Colombo, called upon him to take charge of the motoring column. He immediately became very well-known to the general public for his passionate reports, which were always studded with expert technical analyses and colorful behind-the-scenes anecdotes.

He poured this same passion into numerous articles and books dedicated to the automobile and motorsport. Among the many, worthy of mention are Automobilismo sportivo e turistico (1947), Prontuario dell'automobilismo sportivo (1956), Uomini e motori (1957), Storia illustrata dell'auto italiana (1961), Automobilismo (1962), Una vita con le corse (1962), La favolosa Targa Florio (1966), and Mille Miglia (1967, 1990).

The present work, in two volumes - Le grandi macchine sportive italiane - written together with Gianni Rogliatti, was published in 1965. Inside, an exceptional document is formed by the three fold-out plates that open the second volume, which is dedicated to the photographic documentation of the subject matter.

These are original drawings - created in 1923 - of the supercharged Fiat 405 engine (the first two plates), as well as the drawing of the 805 racing car. The fact that they represent a truly unique document is due—among other things—to the fact that the 805 cars were destroyed at the time, by order of Giovanni Agnelli, along with everything related to them.

As for the photographic documentation, it illustrates personalities, cars, and events that have made the most significant contributions to Italian motorsport. Almost in their entirety, the illustrations contained in this volume come from Giovanni Canestrini's impressive photographic archive.
